What is FUE Hair Transplant?

FUE or Follicular Unit Extraction is a process wherein individual hair grafts are extracted from the donor region of your body and implanted into the recipient area.

The surgeon performing the procedure will use micropunches, allowing them to extract single follicles and then implant them in the area where the hair loss is prominent. Since its micro punches, there is almost no signs of extraction or implantation. Once the hair grows in, there will be literally no sign of a transplant at all, making this the favoured choice for most. This is however, the procedure chosen when the hair loss is on the lower side or a sense of volume needs to be created. Bio FUE is a procedure that has been developed in-house at AK Clinics and involves the injecting of growth serums, right after the transplant has been completed, ensuring better growth.

How FUE hair transplant works?

The methodology of a Bio FUE hair transplant surgery is as follows:

  • In most cases, the surgeon will suggest the shaving of the full head to ensure a clear field, but in some cases, only the area around the main donor and recipient areas will be shaved.
  • The recipient area will be clearly marked out and the hairline will be drawn using a pen or marker
  • With the help of a micro-punch tool, the follicles will be removed one at a time
  • With another tool, minute holes will be made where the follicles need to be implanted – in most cases, the removal and implantation is simultaneous, reducing the time that the follicles spend outside the body
  • Once the follicles have been placed in the accurate positions, growth serums will be injected and the area will be cleaned and bandaged

You will be given a set of instructions on how to take care of your hair in the days that follow and it is important that you do the same.

What is the difference between FUE and FUT?

While both FUT and FUE can be considered as a permanent hair fall solution, there are some differences between the both.

  • In FUT, a strip of hair is removed and the follicles are removed from that strip, whereas in FUE, each follicle is harvested individually.
  • In FUT, because a strip is being removed, there will be a linear scar that will remain, but in FUE micro punches ensure that the scarring is almost invisible.
  • In FUE, the implantation is most simultaneous, reducing the amount of time the follicles spend outside the body.
  • The time for healing and recovery is generally longer with FUT as compared to FUE.
  • If the recipient area is really large, then FUT is the preferred method.

Ideal Candidate for FUE Hair Transplant?

Before you can even think about the possible FUE hair transplant side effects, you need to first figure out whether you are a suitable candidate for the transplant or not. These are the factors that will determine your candidacy:

  • Your hair loss should have stabilised – this normally happens by around the late 20s or the early 30s
  • The type of hair you have will have a role to play –your surgeon should be able to educate you more
  • The type of hair loss you have will also have to be taken under consideration

How much does FUE cost?

The cost of a transplant will vary from clinic to clinic and city to city, which is why the FUE hair transplant cost cannot be given as a fixed amount. Here are just some of the factors that will affect the final billing:

  • The experience and expertise of the surgeon doing the procedure will have a role to play
  • The extent of the donor and recipient areas will help determine the number of grafts that will be required
  • The actual number of grafts is what will play the biggest role in the final amount
  • Other factors include the actual location of the clinic, the quality of the procedure rooms, the level of training that the support staff etc

Recovery time after FUE Hair Transplant

The recovery time after a FUE hair transplant can vary from person to person, but in most cases, it can take anywhere between three to six weeks for complete recovery.

  • You will be able to return home the same day as the procedure
  • Within 4-7 days, the initial swelling and itching should subside and most of the scabs should also fall off within this time
  • In the first two to three weeks, the newly transplanted hair will fall off and this is completely natural
  • In about four months, the new hair should start growing in and the permanent hair should have taken hold

Choosing a FUE Hair Transplant Surgeon

When you are looking to get your transplant done, you need to find the best FUE hair transplant surgeon, because that would give a high level of assurance that you will have a successful procedure. Here are some of the other factors that need to kept in mind:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is FUE Hair Transplant Painful?

Absolutely not! If you are getting your transplant done from a licensed and reputed hair restoration clinic, there will be no need for any worries. The procedure is done under topical anaesthesia, which means that you will not feel any pain. In case you are concerned, you can even ask for sedation. There could be a little discomfort once the anaesthesia wears off, but you could always ask for medication to help with the possible pain or discomfort.

Before you can get a transplant, it is imperative that your hair loss has stabilised – if you get a transplant before your hair loss has stabilised the chances of the procedure failing are much higher. The ideal age for getting a transplant is considered after 25; but the late 20s and early 30s would be the best age.

This is something that the surgeon will decide – in some cases, the entire head might have to be shaved off, but in other cases, only the portion where the transplant needs to be done will have to be shaved off. There are also clinics which will suggest shaving off the entire head to ensure a proper area for working.

TWhen you compare FUE hair transplant vs strip, one of the main differences is the need to shave – in FUT, in most scenarios there is no need to shave the head, because only a strip of hair is removed. However, with FUE, a large number of surgeons will suggest the shaving off of the entire head, because it provides a clear work zone and eventually better results.

One of the advantages of FUE hair transplant is that it looks incredibly natural – unlike an FUT, in an FUE, each graft is removed individually, which means that the scars are miniscule. So, when the hair grows back, these minute scars are hidden and not visible at all. Moreover, if the procedure has been done by experienced hands, the new hair growth will be in the same direction as your actual hair, making the transplant ‘invisible’.

One part of the FUE hair transplant journey is the recovery and the itching is also a part of it – after a transplant, the skin and scalp starts to heal and there could be some amount of skin stretching and drying. This is what often leads to the itchy feeling, but it is essential that you not itch, because it could dislodge the fragile grafts.
